Why Massage?
Scheduling a massage while experiencing pain or discomfort, or as a treat or
celebration, may seem obvious. However, there are
scientific and spiritual reasons for receiving
massage regularly as part of your wellness regime.
Massage, simply the stimulation of tissue and muscle by varied techniques,
accomplishes many things:
- Stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system -- the “rest and digest”
function. Through massage we “turn off” the part of the body that allows us to
outrun a tiger, lift a car off of a baby and maneuver Bay Area traffic. A
quieted nervous system improves sleep, digestion and immune function and
alleviates stress
–
which some experts believe accounts for 80-90 percent of diseases.
Increases circulation, allowing the body to
pump oxygen and nutrients to tissues and vital organs, and stimulates the
lymph system, the body’s natural defense system.
Relaxes and softens injured and overused
muscles, reduces muscle spasm and cramping and increases flexibility and range
of motion.
Reduces recovery time from body stressors,
ranging from surgery and birthing to a grueling spin class or packing boxes
for a move.
Floods the body with natural painkillers
– endorphins –
which can be used to manage
chronic illness, injury and pain.
Improves kinesthetic awareness. By tuning into your body during massage and
noticing its messages, we can work together to address specific needs through
corrective exercise, stretches and increased attention.
Helps in managing pain, stress,
cancer-related fatigue, sleep disorders, high-blood pressure, immune
suppression, depression and musculoskeletal pain.
